Update from the Headteacher

Following my letter of 27th February, I wanted to write again as the government’s guidance on the coronavirus has changed from the ‘contain’ phase to one of ‘delaying’ the spread of the virus.

We would like to reassure you that at Marner, we are taking all of the necessary steps to protect our community and are continuing to follow official guidance from the government, Public Health England and Tower Hamlets

What is the current situation at Marner?

The school remains open – this is the current official guidance we have been given and all  school functions continue to run as normal.

However, we are postponing the Parents’ Evenings this week due to staff absence and to ensure the building is fully cleaned each evening.

What if my child is unwell?

Pupils should attend unless they feel unwell – if your child has any of the following symptoms, they should remain at home for 7 days:

  • a new, continuous cough and/or
  • a high temperature (above 37.8)

If your child is unwell, report this to us as you would normally by calling the school.

We will keep you up to date with any changes to the current situation but as a school:

  • We continue our discussions with the children about how we keep the spread of any virus to a minimum through good hand hygiene.
  • We are ensuring that our supplies of soap and other sanitizers remain at an appropriate level.
  • We are encouraging all pupils and staff to follow CATCH IT, KILL IT, BIN IT whenever they sneeze!
  • The school toilets are cleaned twice daily as part of our cleaning contract and all shared surfaces at least daily.
  • Our cleaning contractor has completed awareness training with members of our cleaning team in line with public health guidelines.

What we need you to do

  • If you have recently changed your contact details, please inform us as soon as possible by contacting the school office and updating your information.
  • We will always contact you if your child needs to go home for any reason and we ask that you come and collect your child as soon as possible, if we contact you

What happens if the school has to close?

We will only close if we are either officially advised to do so or we do not have enough staff to run the school. However, we already have a plan in place which we will follow in case school closure becomes necessary.

If we need to close, we will:

  • Alert all parents and carers about the arrangements for closure via text
  • We will then update our website with the relevant information
  • The ‘text then website’ method will be used for all future announcements including when school will reopen.
  • We will also activate a learning page with links for the children and activities for them to undertake, as well as sending home reading books and other age appropriate learning resources – depending upon which year group they are in.

Please keep in mind that we are only sending out this information to help the school community prepare.

It is a tricky time and we know you are worried about the impact this might have on our community. It is important we keep each other safe and talk about these events to try and help with any anxiety.

Hygiene advice

As a school:

  • There are ongoing discussions with the children about how we keep the spread of any virus to a minimum through good hand hygiene.
  • Although these discussions happen on a daily basis anyway, we are redoubling our efforts and reinforcing the key messages.
