Marner Primary School Equality Statement and Objectives

Our Commitment to Equality
At Marner Primary School, we are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for every member of our community — pupils, staff, parents, and visitors. Under the Equality Act 2010, schools have a duty to promote equality and eliminate discrimination. For us, this is not only a legal responsibility but also a moral one, rooted in our school vision: Inspire, Empower, Achieve.
We believe that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. Ensuring fair treatment, equal access, and a genuine sense of belonging for everyone is fundamental to the ethos that underpins all that we do at Marner.

Our Legal Duties
The Equality Act requires us to have due regard to the need to:
- Eliminate discrimination, harassment, and victimisation, and any other conduct prohibited by the Act.
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
- Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not. A protected characteristic includes, but is not limited to: race, disability, sex, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, gender reassignment,
and marriage or civil partnership. We recognise and celebrate diversity as a source of strength and pride. Every person at Marner contributes to the richness of our school community, and we work hard to ensure that everyone feels valued and supported to succeed.

Our Approach
We also believe that the way we treat people reflects the way we treat the wider world around us. Compassion, fairness, and respect are not limited resources — they are the foundation of our school culture. By modelling these values, we help our pupils grow into kind, thoughtful citizens who respect others, challenge injustice, and contribute positively to society.

Equality Objectives 2025–2028
Our equality objectives are based on the principles of human rights, fairness, and dignity, and align with our school vision to Inspire, Empower, Achieve. They are designed to embed equality in our daily practice and long-term culture.

1. Sustain a culture of equality and inclusion across all school policies, practices, and curriculum design.

2. Develop pupils’ understanding and commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring they recognise and challenge discrimination in all its forms.

3. Deepen awareness among pupils and staff of the strengths, needs, and experiences of people who share protected characteristics.

4. Refine our school systems and policies to eliminate discrimination, promote fairness, and ensure equitable access to all opportunities.

5. Celebrate the diversity of our community, valuing the unique characteristics, cultures, and contributions of every pupil, family, and member of staff.

Putting Our Principles into Practice
At Marner, equality is at the heart of everyday practice. We demonstrate this commitment by:
- Reviewing all school policies and decisions through an equalities lens to ensure inclusivity and fairness.
- Monitoring pupil outcomes, participation, and engagement across all groups, and addressing any barriers identified.
- Ensuring that our curriculum reflects and celebrates the diversity of modern Britain.
- Embedding the British Values of respect, tolerance, and mutual understanding throughout our teaching and wider school culture.
- Creating a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels respected,
valued, and heard.
- Supporting staff wellbeing and ensuring reasonable adjustments where needed to promote equity in the workplace.
- Building strong, trusting relationships with parents and carers so that all families feel welcome and confident to engage with the school.
- Recognising and celebrating world events, festivals, and awareness days that reflect the diversity of our school and local community.
