Maths
Marner, we love maths!
We believe that all children can be successful in maths and Marner is full of enthusiastic mathematicians.
Marner Mathematicians:
- Use concrete hands-on resources to build understanding
- Practise their number facts
- Draw, talk and do whatever they need to do to make sense of their learning
- Talk about their maths and enjoy proving why their answer is correct
- Make mistakes and learn from those mistakes.
- Find solutions to problems, however tricky they may be

And they’re resilient – they think:
- This is hard!
- What do I already know?
- Now, how am I going to use it to help me work this question out?

Maths Curriculum
We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme of Learning. The curriculum is broken down into a series of ‘blocks’ with each ‘block’ broken down into a series of sequenced ‘small steps’. Each step builds carefully from the previous step, building on pupils’ prior knowledge to develop new skills.
Each small step is resourced using a variety of resources which include White Rose Maths resources and resources from I See Reasoning, Third Space Learning and NRICH.
The curriculum is cumulative so once a topic is covered, it is met many times again in other contexts. This progression document shows how the curriculum links to the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 National Curriculum and how topics are developed over time:
The White Rose Maths curriculum is designed to build understanding, confidence and competence in Maths - children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, enjoy reasoning and learn how to problem solve.
At Marner, we want learning to be strong and secure so that children make progress as they move up the school and look forward to continuing their maths journeys at Secondary School.
Maths Teaching and Learning
Our approach to maths teaching and learning is inspired by the Education Endowment Foundation. In particular, we focus on the three tiers: high-quality teaching to improve attainment for all pupils (carefully planned and taught lessons by our fantastic, widely experienced teaching staff), targeted academic support (e.g. interventions and Mastering Number) and wider strategies (e.g. parent workshops, Maths Week and Number Day). Our lessons follow an I do, we do, you do scaffolded structure, where all concepts are carefully modelled and practised to allow for successful outcomes.

Marner Mathematicians Number Facts Practice Zone:
At the heart of strong mathematical fluency are secure number facts. To build this, we use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) and Numbots for regular practice, both in school and at home. These platforms form an important part of our weekly homework expectations.
Every two weeks, we celebrate progress in our Maths Celebration Assembly, where children are awarded badges and certificates for reaching new levels and milestones. Our highest achievements are the prestigious Diamond and Rock Hero statuses!
Maths is full of new vocabulary with precise definitions - these words help us to confidently explain how we know.
This Maths Dictionary is excellent – it explains what the word means and gives examples.
