Science
At Marner Primary School, our Science curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, nurture questioning minds and develop a strong foundation of scientific knowledge and skills. From the very start of their journey in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children are encouraged to explore the world around them through hands-on investigation, discussion and play-based learning. In EYFS, Science is taught through the Understanding the World strand of the Early Years Framework, where children observe seasonal change, explore materials, learn about animals and habitats, and begin to ask questions about how and why things happen. Our approach ensures that children develop early scientific vocabulary, confidence in enquiry and a sense of wonder about the natural world.
In Key Stage 1, our curriculum follows the statutory guidance set out in the National Curriculum for England, building on children’s early experiences and introducing them to core scientific concepts. Pupils learn about plants, animals (including humans), everyday materials and seasonal changes, while developing their working scientifically skills such as observing closely, identifying and classifying, and carrying out simple comparative tests. Lessons are practical, engaging and vocabulary-rich, ensuring that children not only gain knowledge but also understand how scientists work. Assessment is carefully planned using PLAN (Primary Learning Assessment Network) materials to support teachers in identifying secure understanding and planning next steps.
In Key Stage 2, pupils deepen their scientific knowledge and extend their enquiry skills through more complex investigations and conceptual understanding. Following the National Curriculum for England, children study topics such as forces, electricity, sound, light, evolution, states of matter and Earth and space. They learn to plan fair tests, interpret data, draw conclusions and present findings using appropriate scientific language. Our use of PLAN ensures that assessment is purposeful and supports high-quality teaching, enabling teachers to accurately track progress and provide challenge or support where needed. Across the school, our aim is to develop confident, inquisitive learners who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to succeed in Science and beyond.
The PLAN primary science resources were developed with the Tower Hamlets Education Partnership (THEP).
